Project Nakyessa 2006

In September 2005, 21 Christians from Canada and North Americavisited Uganda where this skilled team of volunteers provided medical, educational and agricultural support for select communities of thenation, with special emphasis on the Nakyessa School and Orphanage.Field clinics in the Kayunga District, new playground equipment, ahennery, drip irrigation systems and dormitory repairs for the NakyessaSchool were some of the projects undertaken by this volunteer group.

Now,with a wider understanding of the overall needs among these 550children, High Adventure Canada is about to take another team ofvolunteers to the Nakyessa School in Uganda. This visit is scheduledfor July 1-14, 2006 and is designed to provide a variety of support forthe students/orphans of Nakyessa School and village. The projectsinclude:

Clinic

This 1100 square foot medical clinic willafford daily care for 10,000 Ugandans living within a 5 mile radius ofthe village. Funds for the construction of this clinic have been raisedfrom Christian churches and individuals in Canada and the USA andequipment has been donated from generous individuals in the UK. Thisvolunteer team will be involved in preparing this clinic for itsmid-July opening.

Special Power Need

All funds forbuilding and staffing have been raised but an unexpected power sheddingproblem in Uganda’s power grid has forced us to consider a solarpowered system ($2,500.00) as well as an inverter system (that collectsand stores the power captured from the sun-$1,100.00) and another$500.00 to purchase a 3-way (AC/DC/PROPANE) fridge for medicines. Thisclinic will be utilized to provide healthcare to Christians, Muslimsand witchcraft practitioners alike but the clinic will be staffed witha full time Christian nurse as well as a supply of tracts in locallanguages. If funding were available, the felt healthcare need would bemet immediately.

Total amount needed…………………………………………………………..$4,000.00 USD

Hennery

Thisbuilding and 300 chickens will be the second (of 7) such plannedbuildings for the children, all of which is intended to provide muchneeded protein on a self-sustaining basis. Each building, together withthe 300 chickens and a full year of food and vet care requires$5,200.00 USD. High Adventure is fund-raising with plans for theconstruction of the second hennery. Additional henneries can be addedif funds allow.

Goat Herd

Many Ugandan students sufferfrom calcium deficiency, leading to brittle bones and other relatedhealth difficulties. High Adventure has been collecting funds for 6months and is almost within reach of providing a herd of 10 specializedmilk-goats together with the food, housing and vet care for a fullyear. This self-sustaining milk program for children requires $7,000.00USD and to date, $5,000.00 USD has been raised. Once project funds havebeen realized, there will be sufficient milk to feed all children atthe Nakyessa School at no cost to the children, many of whom areorphaned. Volunteers on this trip will participate in the constructionof this goat building.

Maize Corn and Beans

ROTO TILLERS SHIPPING NEED…Thisis a food-staple for students at Nakyessa but severe funds shortageoften does not allow for regular provision. Most times, studentsreceive one meal per day. High Adventure has raised $2,600.00 topurchase 2 Garden Roto-tillers, capable of maintaining the currenthalf-acre gardens as well as a installing and maintaining a planned4-acre plot of land where maize corn and beans will be planted. Avolunteer (and travel costs of $1400.00) with experience in operationof this walk-behind tiller has also been committed. This volunteer willalso train select Uganda youth in the machine’s operation sovegetables, corn and bean crops will continue after the team leavesUganda and the equipment will be used to provide gardens fordisadvantaged village dwelling people. Only the $950.00 cost ofshipping these machines is required.

SOLAR POWERED ELECTRIC FENCE…is a technology used widely in North America to keep unwanted animalsout of gardens and fields. A 4-acre field of maize corn and beans is aprime target for Nakyessa village animals in search of food, but thesafe but effective solution of a solar powered elctric fence willafford the cost effective protection this new food supply requires. This fence must be installed with termite-proof metallic poles andinsulators. Cost of this special fence is $700.00

Education

EQUIPMENT…WhileHigh Adventure’s 2005 trip focused on building repairs and upgrades, its 2006 visit will provide teacher skills enhancement as well asclassroom instruction opportunities for select grade levels. Skillsenhancement for Nakyessa teachers requires a commitment to teachingtechniques and materials. This facet of education enhancement requires$1,000.00 USD for basic materials and equipment such as newblackboards, books and other instructional visual aids.

SALARIES…Highunemployment and the resulting severe financial restrictions havecaused intense pressure on the school’s ability to provide salaries ofNakyessa teachers, assistants and on site support staff. The averagedmonthly salary of $46.00 per person is required to provide freeeducation for orphaned and desperately poor Ugandan children. Contactus with your tax-deductible pledge and/or gift today. It will beapplied directly and entirely to meet this need for teacher support. Agift of $552.00 will fully support one teacher for a year, resulting ineducation for Ugandan children.

All gifts provided for this unique working mission visit aretax-deductible in Canada and the USA. Contact Marty at 1-800-550-4670or mailto:marty@biblevoice.org for details on joining the team or supporting the project.
